Philadelphia, as a heavily active port, needed a way to stem the tropical diseases spreading through the masses. In 1799, Philadelphia erected the Lazaretto to quarantine passengers, cargo, and ships as they arrived. The Lazaretto has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, and is a monument to the vitality of the port of Philadelphia.
