Trip Planning - Tidal Delaware Tri Bridge Urban Water Front Tour
Access: Kayakers can access the Delaware River at the Pennsauken Boat Ramp, New Jersey.
For a roundtrip excursion, travel downstream towards Philadelphia on the New Jersey side, keeping to the east side of Petty Island. From there continue downstream to the Ben Franklin Bridge. In this area, paddlers may also venture into the mouth of the Cooper River tributary. Return along the same route back to Pennsauken. Paddlers can also explore the west side of Petty Island.
For a one-way excursion, continue downstream past the Ben Franklin Bridge through the urban corridor and take out at the boat ramp at National Park, New Jersey.
Access: There is public access for motor boaters at several locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Access the Tri-bridge area from upriver at the Pennsauken Boat Ramp (NJ), Frankford Arsenal (PA), or Tacony (PA) ramps. The Pennsauken launch site is just down river from the Betsy Ross Bridge. The Frankford Arsenal and Tacony launch sites are 1 and 3 miles, respectively, miles upriver from the Betsy Ross. Access the Tri-bridge area from downriver at the National Park, New Jersey boat ramp approximately 4 miles below the Walt Whitman Bridge.
Several private marinas are located near the Ben Franklin Bridge between river miles 99 and 100; all offer transient docking. See the water trail map access point chart for details on the availability of fuel and other services.
The river is an especially active place in this stretch between the Walt Whitman and Betsy Ross Bridges. Be alert for big boat traffic, particularly in the shipping lane and anchorage areas. A calmer haven can be found on the east side of Petty Island between the Betsy Ross and Ben Franklin Bridges.
